Corrosion Inhibitors

In order to prevent corrosion, scaling and deposition of suspended solids within a closed circuit system it is essential that an effective inhibitor is dosed into the system and maintained at the correct levels. The development and formulation of an effective inhibitor is complex. Formulations must contain inhibitor components which will prevent corrosion of all metal types within a system, raw materials which prevent the formation of scale crystals and their deposition and polymers which hold solids within suspension.

Following the formulation of each new inhibitor a complex range of testing is carried out in order to ensure that the inhibitor does prevent corrosion and scaling at the recommended dose rates. Extensive independent testing, with excellent results, has also been carried out by BuildCert on a selection of our multi metal inhibitors. This independent testing validates the efficacy of these inhibitors ensuring our customers of the quality of the formulations we have developed.

It is critical that the inhibitor is in full contact with the metal surfaces within the system for effective corrosion protection to take place. Layers of grease, suspended solids and biofilm within the system will coat the metal surface thus preventing the inhibitor from contacting the metal. In this case under deposit corrosion is likely to occur.

The choice of corrosion inhibitor is determined by various factors including the pH, the construction materials and the water hardness. All our closed circuit formulations contain  corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors and polymers. The prevention of microbial growth is achieved by the addition of an appropriate biocide to the system.

Corrosion Inhibitors

It is often the case that customers do not know whether Aluminium components are present in their system. If in any doubt as to whether any aluminium is present in a system it is recommended that a multi metal inhibitor is used, which is suitable for use in the presence of aluminium.

If it can be confirmed that the system is comprised only of yellow metals, cast iron / steel components and that no aluminium is present then the following inhibitors are suitable for use in the system. For advice on product selection please contact our B & V Own Label technical department.

Pre-Commission Cleaners / Flushing Cleaners

It is essential in the case of new systems that a thorough pre-commission clean is carried out in order to ensure that all installation debris, mill scale and grease is removed from the system. A thorough clean, carried out in accordance with BSRIA B29 2012 pre-commission cleaning of pipework systems, will ensure that the metal surfaces in the system are clean and free from any deposits enabling the corrosion inhibitor to have full contact with the metal.

The selection of a pre-commission cleaner will need to take into account several factors, including:

Older systems, which have become contaminated with organic material such as biofilm or corrosion deposits, may also require flushing. B & V Own Label Products have a full range of system flush chemicals specifically formulated for the remediation of older systems.

Closed System Biocides

In most closed circuits, a biocide will be needed to prevent the problems associated with microbial growth within the system.

Closed Circuit Systems, if left filled and untreated, can quickly develop a biofilm layer on pipe surfaces. The biofilm forms a protective layer over the settled bacteria, rendering it impenetrable to most biocides typically used within these water systems. Many different species of bacteria are able to develop on the pipe wall, some of which can directly induce under deposit corrosion.

Some bacteria can use the components present in the inhibitor, such as nitrite and phosphate, as a food source thus depleting the levels of inhibitor in the system, indirectly causing corrosion. The degradation of glycol by bacteria to glycolic and oxalic acids can reduce the pH of the system and in this way also promote corrosion as the pH of the system becomes more acidic.

For this reason the selection of a suitable biocide for use within a particular closed circuit system is essential.

Glycol / Antifreeze Chemicals

Glycol is used as an antifreeze in closed circuit chiller systems which do not have trace heating to prevent freezing of the systems. A concentration of 25% glycol is generally specified in order to give a system freeze protection down to -120C. At this level the glycol in the system also acts as a biostat preventing the growth of bacteria. If glycol levels within a system fall below 20% bacteria are able to grow within the system and will use the glycol as a food source. It is therefore important that the correct levels of glycol are maintained and that these chiller systems also contain an effective biocide.

Monoethylene glycol is generally used for freeze protection in the majority of chiller circuits but mono propylene glycol is specified for use in food factories, pharmaceutical manufacturers and for some hospital applications because of its purity and low toxicity.

Biofilm Remover

If a layer of biofilm is present in a closed circuit system it is often difficult to control the levels of bacteria within the system. Any biocide added will kill the bacteria floating freely within the system water but as the biocide degrades over time the system will become recolonized with bacteria from the biofilm. Biofilm also produces a thin layer on the metal surface which prevents the corrosion inhibitor from contacting the metal surface. Under deposit corrosion is therefore likely in this situation.

In order to effectively remove biofilm from the surfaces of a closed circuit system it is recommended that BV 167 is dosed with a biocide into the system. As this product removes biofilm very effectively it is essential to ensure that the system treated contains easily accessible strainers which can be removed and cleaned in order to remove dislodged biofilm from the system.

On-Line Descaler

The build- up of scale within a closed circuit system can be a particular problem in hard water areas. Scale deposits will build up on the hottest areas of the system, in particular on heat exchanger surfaces. The build- up of scale in these areas can severely restrict the heat transfer efficiency of these systems, potentially resulting in increased energy costs. Scale will also coat the metal surfaces preventing the inhibitor from protecting the metal from corrosion. In this case under deposit corrosion can occur.

Acid-based chemicals can be used for removing scale from these systems. An acid clean generally involves shut down of the system and may result in damage of sensitive components within the system. B & V Own Label Products’ polymer based on line de-scaler has been specifically formulated to remove scale whilst the system is running. Scale is gradually re-solubilised during normal operation of the system. As scale is removed the solution within the system will gradually become more cloudy and will need to be flushed from the system at the end of the descaling operation. The formulation is designed to ensure minimal disruption to system operation and to avoid the potential damage to systems from the use of aggressive acid-based products.

Automatic Dosing of Closed System Water Treatment Chemicals

Closed water system chemicals can be dosed automatically in systems where there are large amounts of make-up to the system. This can be done via a precise chemical pump that is controlled by specifically designed equipment, which ensures the correct amount of chemical is added for each application. A popular method for closed systems is to link the chemical pump to a water meter that is measuring the make-up water quantity, so that chemical is replenished as water is added. However, some systems will have a very low make up which may cause inhibitor levels to fall - it is essential to carry out periodic chemical tests to ensure that the correct chemical levels are maintained.
