Cooling Water System Chemical Range

The primary objectives in the design, operation and effective treatment of cooling water systems include:-

There are a number of considerations, when operating a cooling system, to ensure the achievement of the above objectives. These include the control of scale, corrosion, fouling and microbiological contamination.  

 

Scale & Corrosion Inhibitors

Scale is caused by the formation of insoluble calcium and magnesium salts, and appears as a rock-like coating. If scale is allowed to form in heat exchangers and cooling tower packing, it will lead to a reduction in heat transfer and cooling capacity, as well as acting as a breeding ground for bacteria.

In areas of the country where water hardness is high it is necessary  to minimise the likelihood of scale build-up and to optimise water use within the system through applying a water softener prior to use. Unfortunately, the removal of hardness from the make-up water increases the corrosiveness of the water. In the chemical treatment of a cooling tower there is a fine balance to ensure that optimal scale and corrosion protection is achieved.

Biocides

The water within a cooling system provides optimal growth conditions for many species of bacteria, including Legionella spp. The warm environment and high levels of organic debris make for a particularly pleasant environment for rapid bacterial growth if this is left uncontrolled. 

Biofilm build up within a system will greatly inhibit the heat transfer efficiency of the system as well as blocking pipe-work. A build-up of biofilm within a system will also encourage the growth of Legionella bacteria and may promote the formation of under deposit corrosion. 

Legislation requires that cooling towers must prevent the proliferation of Legionella bacteria within these systems as a precaution against the outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease. It is therefore critical that the correct biocidal treatment regime is implemented and regular checks are carried out to ensure that bacterial populations within the system are kept under control. 

Biocides can be divided into two main groups:

 

Oxidising Biocides

Oxidising biocides simply oxidise microbial cells and will kill most micro-organisms including bacteria, algae, fungi and yeasts. The main oxidising biocides used in the UK for the control of microbial growth in cooling towers are chlorine and bromine based.

Non-Oxidising Biocides

Non-oxidising biocides kill microorganisms typically by disrupting the organism’s metabolism or damaging the cell wall. Many water treatment companies will use a programme of both oxidising and non-oxidising biocides in order to efficiently control microbial populations within the system. In most cases, the oxidising biocide is used to control the influx of micro-organisms entering the system and the continual low level present acts as a biostat within the system. A non-oxidising biocide is then used as a periodic shock dose to the system. If no oxidising biocide treatment is used within a system then alternating non-oxidising biocides can be used to control microbial populations.

It is essential to control microbiological growth in cooling systems.

A well planned, flexible, controlled and monitored biocide dosing regime should be implemented in order to keep a system clean and free from biofilm and fouling. The biocide treatment programme should include a bio dispersant, either as part of the dosing programme or as a separately dosed chemical. For example, BV54 contains a hypochlorite and a bio-dispersant and is dosed with BV55 to produce hypobromous acid. If BV102, hypochlorite solution is dosed with BV55 a supplementary bio dispersant will be required.

 

Cooling Water Dispersants and Antifoam

On occasion it is necessary to dose supplementary biodispersant into a cooling system. This may be as part of an on-going treatment programme or a biodispersant may be required when cleaning out a badly fouled system. Care is required when dosing these chemicals as excessive dosing and agitation within the system can give rise to the production of foam.

PackCleanse Range

The B & V Own Label Products’ PackCleanse cleaning system effectively cleans light to moderately fouled packs by combining the disinfecting power of chlorine dioxide with the cleaning power of a weakly acidic surfactant mixture. The system produces a high-cling foam which is applied to surfaces to be cleaned under low pressure.

Ideally, cooling tower pack should be removed for cleaning and inspection. In some cases, if pack removal is not possible from a health and safety or access point of view, the pack can be cleaned in place using the PackCleanse range of chemicals. It is essential to consult HSG 274 part 1: “The control of legionella bacteria in evaporative cooling systems”, to ensure that the correct level of pre and post inspection and monitoring is carried out to ensure such a clean has been carried out successfully.

Dosing of Cooling Water Chemicals

Cooling water chemicals are ideally dosed automatically via a precise chemical pump that is controlled by equipment that will give the correct amount of chemical for the application. There are several methods of achieving this. The two most popular methods are to either link the pump to a water meter or to the operation feed pump so that the dosing is proportional to the evaporation load of the system.
