Disinfection by Chlorine Dioxide
Chlorine dioxide (ClO˛) is effective as both a disinfectant and an oxidant in water treatment. Chlorine dioxide is a broad spectrum microbiocide effective over a wide pH range. Unlike chlorine, chlorine dioxide does not react with organic materials to form trihalomethanes (THMs). Chlorine dioxide is also non-reactive with ammonia-nitrogen and with most treatment chemicals (corrosion and scale inhibitors) present in cooling water systems.
Chlorine dioxide is effective in the control of microbiological growths in industrial cooling waters under conditions unfavourable to chlorine. It is particularly effective in systems having a high pH, ammonia-nitrogen contamination, persistent slime problems, or where the microbial contamination is aggravated by contamination with vegetable or mineral oils, phenols or other high chlorine-demand producing compounds.
Dependant on the application there are three methods generally used for the generation of chlorine dioxide in water treatment as detailed below:
Optichlor tablets
A tableted source of stabilised chlorine dioxide used for small sanitising applications. Optichlor tablets are available in 5g, 10g, 30g and 50g sizes. No activator is required. The tablets are dissolved in a measured volume of water in order to produce a specific ppm of ready to use and conveniently produced chlorine dioxide.
Stabilised Chlorine Dioxide + Activator
B & V Water Treatment supply a 2% stabilised chlorine dioxide solution + activator (Microbiocide CD + Activator) to customers. This product produces an easy to use source of chlorine dioxide for many applications including cleans and chlorinations of down water services.
Chlorine dioxide generation
Chlorine dioxide is generated on site through a chlorine dioxide generator utilising the following chemical reaction:
5NaClO2 + 4HCl → 4ClO2 + 5NaCl + 2H2O
